Brunswick Regional Water & Sewer H2GO

WATER SYSTEM TECHNICIAN

 

DEFINITION            

 This is a non-exempt position, which is manual semi-skilled work in the care and maintenance of water and wastewater lines, manholes, pump stations, meters and all other aspects pertaining to a water and wastewater utilities systems.

 

The work involves the operation of heavy equipment and tools which are needed to make repairs to water and wastewater lines.  Work is usually performed under the direction of a higher classification; however, constant supervision is not necessary for familiar tasks which can be performed without difficulty.  Employee is subject to call outs at anytime.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED  

  • Will install, maintain and repair lines, water meters and fire hydrants.
  • Will perform preventive maintenance of wastewater systems, manholes, etc.
  • May perform backflow preventive duties.
  • Will operate various mechanical equipment used in maintenance and repair of water and wastewater lines.
  • Will operate heavy equipment.
  • Reads and understands blue prints and as-built drawings and interprets for field work.
  • May perform mechanical repairs at pump stations and wastewater plants.
  • Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS            

  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures for water and wastewater utilities system.
  • Knowledge of proper sanitation procedures for water main repair.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety procedures.
  • Ability to assist other crews when necessary.
  • Ability to operate equipment used for repair of water and wastewater lines and water meters  including but not limited to backhoe, sewer cleaning truck, mini-excavator.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly. 
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
  • Ability to install, maintain and repair lines, water meters and fire hydrants.
  • Ability to perform backflow preventive duties.
  • Ability to read and understand blue prints and as-built drawings.
  • Ability to operate a District vehicle and acquire a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within six (6) months of employment in position.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including call outs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other District employees and the general public.

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience equivalency commonly associated with a high school diploma; ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations; sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING             

Five (5) years of experience performing all related work necessary to maintain a water distribution and sewage collection system.  Some plumbing experience required.  North Carolina Class C water distribution license and/or North Carolina Class I wastewater collection system license. 

 

Driving Record Standard For Applicant

Applicants must have in their possession a valid North Carolina driver’s license.  Applications will be submitted to the hiring authority without a driving history being conducted.  When the hiring authority has determined which candidates are to be interviewed, their names will be provided to Human Resources.  At that time, Human Resources will conduct the applicant’s driving history and provide feedback to the requestor.  Applicants with driving records with convictions listed below will be disqualified.  Applicants will not be consideredfor positions requiring a valid North Carolina driver’s license if their driving record contains any of the following:

  • Conviction of driving while intoxicated, impaired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol within the last (3) years preceding the closing date of the vacancy. (N.C.G.S. 20-138.1)
  • Conviction for driving while impaired (DWI) on three (3) or more occasions within the last seven (7) years. (N.C.G.S 20-138.5)
  • Conviction of involuntary manslaughter involving an automobile or death by vehicle within (3) years preceding the closing date of the vacancy posting. (N.C.G.S. 20-141.4)
  • Conviction for traffic violations totaling eight (8) points or more within the last three (3) years preceding the closing date of the vacancy posting. (N.C.G.S 20-16)
  • Suspension or revocation of North Carolina driver’s license within last three (3) years of the vacancy posting. (Note that a summary30-day license revocation for a driver charged with driving impaired (DWI) shall result in a temporary unacceptable driving record.  Final action shall be deferred until such time as the resolution of the infraction or violation which caused the summary 30-day license revocation is known.) (N.C.G.S 20-16.5)
  • When an applicant’s overall driving record reveals a pattern of convictions for traffic offenses and the applicant’s capacity to safely operate a Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2GO vehicle or heavy piece of equipment is questionable, the Human Resource Department, after consultation with the hiring manager, shall reserve the right to approve or disapprove the applicant based on their overall driving record and the position for which the applicant has applied.

WAGES/SALARY RANGE

$23,759 to $28,879

Eligible for inclusion in the NC Retirement System
